It seems emergency text messages are the new black when it comes to public safety. New York’s MTA, the organization that runs—really well I might add—the subways and busses will hire a company to develop a mass text messaging system. The MTA would then use this system to inform riders about pertinent service changes (“The 7 train isn’t running today. Good luck getting to work, pleb.”) If everything works out, the system should be in place and functional by springtime.
A fine idea. I’m sorta weary of giving my number to the MTA—Lord knows the number will “accidentally” be sold to a telemarketing firm—but that type of technological integration is exactly what the dumb subways need. Well, that and running reliably, but that’ll never happen.
