Those wacky Samsung folks are at it again with a 8.5mm thick optical CMOS camera phone module. The mobile phone specific module is 10 percent less than what’s available now and ISO levels have been boosted to 1600. There’s also an anti-shake feature and a super-noise processing technology called Low Light Trio that’s been implemented into the sensor. They’ve even managed to cram in facial recognition and an automatic shoot mode when your subjects flash those pearly whites. Samsung is boasting that this tiny miracle is capable of going beyond 5-megapixels. The new CMOS sensors will go into mass production in the latter half of the year and I suspect we’ll be seeing these in early 2009.
