Ticketing service Fandango just announced that it has acquired Movieclips from online video company Zefr.
TechCrunch’s Ryan Lawler reported earlier this month that a deal was in the works.
Zefr launched in 2009 under the Movieclips name, and it did pretty much what the name suggests — it licensed movie clips from studios and posted them on YouTube. In the years since, its focus has shifted to selling tools that allow companies to find and monetize their content when it’s posted online by users.
Fandango, meanwhile, has been trying to expand beyond ticketing with its own video programs. Back in January, Mark Young, the vice president of mobile strategy and business development at NBCUniversal (which owns Fandango), told me the goal was to use video as a form of “content discovery” and turn Fandango into “the movie discovery brand.”
“The MOVIECLIPS acquisition will further serve our fans, enhancing the Fandango experience with amazing video content available at one definitive destination,” said Fandango President Paul Yanover in the acquisition release.
The companies say that the Movieclips network averages 200 million views a month and includes both Movieclips.com and 25 YouTube channels, with a library of 45,000 film clips, trailers, and original video segments.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
